Finding a more cost effective way to move students around campus, improving the travel offer along the way
Northumbria University in Newcastle came to Stagecoach when their intra-site transport, utilising a small fleet of minibuses, was becoming too costly to operate and wasn’t providing a comprehensive service to students.
In 2016, working in partnership, we found a solution that allowed students to travel on an existing Stagecoach service (route 1). After reviewing different options, it was agreed to offer Northumbria University students free travel between various sites.
As the Service 1 provided a frequent timetable of buses, at least every 10 minutes during the day, this solution offered increased travel opportunities and journey flexibility for the student cohort.
Revenue is reimbursed to Stagecoach at a pre-agreed discounted rate. Originally this was via a per-trip metric but is now delivered as an annual “fixed price” solution. This offers greater budgetary assurance to both parties.
In more recent years, through collaborative working, the Service 1 has subsequently been revised to operate inside the university campus, having previously utilised bus stops on the public road outside the site.

Since 2016, Northumbria University Newcastle has collaborated with Stagecoach for the provision of student transport to and from its satellite Coach Lane Campus. This partnership has provided an excellent transport solution in support of our academic strategy, and has enabled us to increase the frequency of the service, including extending to evening and weekend safe travel. The partnership has provided significant efficiencies on the prior in-house service. The service has exceeded expectations and I am pleased to have a senior point of contact to ensure continued exceptional service.
